                <title>This Behavior Stinks</title>

                        <description><![CDATA[What happened to you  I am thinking A friend whom I havent seen for 6 months opens the door and there he stands at least 20 lbs heavier     Why would something like this happen in such a short period The truth is that it canand does--since the economy officially has been renamed the new economy  Perhaps your body has been renamed to a new you as well     Lately among men I have seen this happening repeatedly Excessive food is consumed in situations that are emotionally upsetting and in particular work performance anxiety Ice cream cheesecake chips French fries and whatever else is handy Have men suddenly become emotional eaters      One thing is for sure Men who are emotional eaters are not aware of this behavior They are gobbling food after each meeting where the sales numbers have not been reached or decisions have been made to restructure or being held responsible for new account dilemmas in an attempt to look for comfort     Drinking for stress release after work is another new way to feel better again Five to six drinks are not unheard of as one of my clients admitted recently Depending on the choice of alcohol it is easy to take in between 125 and 300 calories per drink Multiple this by six and your calories will be between 750 and 1800 calories And remember to gain a pound theoretically  you have to consume 3500 calories    Changes in eating behavior can score for less or more Comfort food is high calorie food Yet even when we eat large quantities of healthy organic food we can be fooled that it is healthy Yet be aware a large quantity of organic food is still added calories And packaged processed organic junk food is still junk food For example organic fried potato chips are still potato chips     Check in with yourself Get on a scale and check yourself Right now Have you gained weight in the last 6 months Yes Then it is time to start to increase your activity again If you are active as youve always been then you need to check in regarding your eating behavior    The first step to improvement is to admit that you gained weight and fat Its ok Now change it Focus again this time to rename your body to a really new you    Stefan]]></description>

                <title>Small steps - Peter's trouble</title>

                        <description><![CDATA[PEEEETER GET DOWN I find myself yelling from the kitchen into the living room as I discovered that Peter my black cat is on my white couch again    How many times did I train him not to go on the couch Once twice or at least one-hundred times He still acts as if he thinks that I cant see him And if I am not there I know that he has been on the couch as I can see the evidence Long black hair from Peter the cat And I clean it off yet again    This behavior reminds me of some adult humans who are trying to lose weight       Take this story I provide detailed eating programs for clients of mine How many meals per day what to eat after workouts what to have for snacks lunches and dinners This is based on the clients food log to work with foods that are beneficial for that individual and which follow the Mental Detox program    In the beginning implementation of the program goes well Pounds are lost and results are seen It is common for individuals to see fantastic results because they follow the program in detail Yet then comfort sets back in    I can relax now as I achieved my weight loss goal and can eat again is the common train of thought But eating again refers to eating and over-eating the foods that have gotten the individual into the situation in the first place    No it is not okay to eat all foodseven when eaten in moderation Some foods are just slippery slopes Eating salt gives you a taste for more salt and sugar for more sugar Or have you been able to stop eating after two or three potato chips or one bite or two bites of chocolate cake     Deprivation doesnt work but planning does One strategy to implement is simply to plan on having one meal once a week where you can eat what you want When you have 35 meals per week 5 per day times 7 are 35  and you have 1 meal that is not on your eating plan that makes 34 meals conducive to your weight loss and 1 that isnt Problems arise when that ratio starts to shift    Check in with yourself What is your ratio of good meals vs bad meals What are good meals and what are bad meals Take a common sense approach for now Good is anything that is fresh and unprocessed Bad is processed with sugar corn syrup and saturated fats These are the foods that wreak havoc with your insulin levels turning them into a roller coaster that make you gain fat because you eat more to maintain your energy    Another easy strategy Change your reward system Your reward should not be to go back to eating the way you were pre-weight loss Why Because you shouldnt get the reward for losing weight Reward yourself because you managed to alter your behavior Behavior changes are what lead to weight loss which must happen before you see the results on the scale    To this day Peter sometimes needs reminding what not do Sometimes he has slips and sleeps on the couch But after training him for months these occasions are less frequent Also I provided him with another soft sleeping area The alternative was a success to changing in behavior as well     Behavior changes can be easily implemented Training yourself to continue those changes will be the true success and proof of your results If Peter can adapt to his new behavior so can you    Make your body your business    Stefan]]></description>

                        <description><![CDATA[Think of the gym Stinking of sweating windows closedhot cold and I dont know whatit all hits you when you work out in the winter months It is not a joy to go to the gym  in fact it feels like torture The economic situation is not helping either Who wants to be motivated and to be active when its so easy to turn on the TV and veg out     I hate the gym stated one of my clients No she doesnt go to the gym to work out but still works out Why do I want to waste my time waiting for a machine or a weight It isnt relaxing and stresses me out even more she says    Enough is enough Look what is happening to us Do we really need a gym to be active Didnt we used to be active just in the great outdoors     Yes the times have changed but our need to breathe fresh air smell the upcoming spring and feel the wind hasnt All the talk about going to the gym and how much more in-shape someone is gets boring soon Think When was the last time you got bored hearing about how nice an exercise session outdoors even just walking  was  how fresh the air smelled after a rainfall  or the sight of the first rays hitting the earth during a snowmelt     I have a task for you this week Get out there     Do the following Instead of your usual cardio training indoors head outdoors No I not taking ANY excuses for an answer Im not referring to training your body outdoors for the rest of your life  instead Im suggesting one single time outdoors in the next 4 days Try it you might like it    When you go outside dont just walk jog or sprint at one continuous speed Do intervals Push your workouts to the 95 level of effort for 5 minutes and then slow down to recover Why A recent study speaks for itself     Although moderate aerobic activity has proven to be beneficial for cardiovascular health a Stanford study shows a 17  reduced risk for cardiovascular disease for those involved in higher intensity training and 23 reduced risk for those involved in resistance training This was cited in the JAM Oct 2002    My response     Hasta La Vistaboth to your belly and to economic depression     Stefan]]></description>

                        <description><![CDATA[Protein is important And what kind of protein even more important If you want to top this where it comes from where it was born and where it was raised is the most important     Who doesnt love protein in one form or the other We all take it in one form or another  diary eggs fish or a variety of other meats such as from chicken turkey pork beef and whatever else    Ok lacto vegetarians I have not forgotten you This blog is for you as well as you eat dairy which comes from cows So all of you should keep reading    In resent years there has been much concern about meats that are high in saturated fats full of antibiotics and hormones Suddenly young girls of the age of 8 started their period and boys have grown fat tissue around their chest Now we are aware of that the use of hormones and antibiotics in our food changes and affects our systems In addition hardly noticed  farmers converted from feeding cattle grass to feeding them grains A little change but with a big impact that you need to know about    This little change of eating grain-fed to grass-fed cattle did the following           Grass feed animals contain half the saturated fat of that from grain-fed animals        A 6-ounce steak therefore has almost 100 fewer calories than one from grain-fed stock        Meat from grass fed animals has two to six times more omega-3 fatty acids        Cows grazing on grass had 500 percent more conjugated linoleic acid in their milk fat than cows from grain-fed stock        Chickens that feed in the pasture have 21 percent less total fat 30 percent less saturated fat 28 percent fewer calories and 100 percent more omega 3 fatty acids than chickens fed on high energy specialty feeds      Yes yes who would have known that such a little change in our food could have such a big impact on an entire nation Definitely not I who is coming from the land of pastures and hills skipping down the meadows to school     So look around when you buy meats See if you can find grass-fed meats vs grain-fed meats Farmers markets are great resources for this  or check the internet    Oh waitpop quiz What do meats do you think fast food chains serve     Kind regards      Stefan]]></description>

                <title>Bare foot running - A new trend?</title>

                        <description><![CDATA[Finally it happened to me I wondered to myself when it would happen already     Two weekends ago I went rollerblading in Central Park and thats when I saw it Someone running barefoot in Central Park Of course I was being cool and like many others I didnt stare It was the same situation as when I go Nordic Walking in the park Although in both situations my thoughts are something like  Only in New York Only in New York    Well not true Many individuals run barefoot Among them are well-known international athletes who have successfully competed shoeless such as Zola Budd-Pieterse from South Africa Surprisingly you can put Austrians who have grown up in the mountains in that category as well As children we ran in the forest in the field and to the neighbors property without shoes Running long-distance events in bare feet is evidently not a barrier to performance at the highest level     Benefits of barefoot running  Barefoot running is beneficial because in some research running shoes appear to increase the risk of ankle sprains This may occur either by decreasing your awareness of foot position or by increasing the twisting torque on the ankle during a stumble     Running in shoes also appears to increase the risk of plantar fasciitis and other chronic injuries of the lower limbs by modifying the transfer of shock to the muscles and supporting structures    Running barefoot reduces oxygen consumption by a few percent Your competitive running performance should therefore improve by a similar amount but there has been no published research comparing this effect    If you want to try running barefoot the philosophy is Take it slow You need to transition slowly not all at once from running in shoes to running shoeless Ligaments muscle and bone strength around the foot and ankle need to be gradually conditioned     This can be simply done by standing on one foot without shoes and socks on an unstable platform like a Bosu or even a folded towel  Or try walking barefoot on the toes Start with only 5-10 minutes of barefoot walking on the ball of the foot and slowly increase the time Eventually aim for a jog and then a run    Three to four weeks of barefoot training will give the plantar skin enough time to become resistant and tough allowing for longer periods of barefoot running without such minor injuries as blistering     Clients of mine have applied my strategies to allow them sprint barefoot but only if it was at the right time in their conditioning program    Starting this year there will be a new event at Strength 123 I will take 5 individuals of similar condition upstate for track running barefoot    If you are interested in this outing please sent us an brief note through supportstefanaschancom     Kind regards    Stefan]]></description>
